Being a "MOM"

I've been doing a lot of thinking (during quiet time or while Ashlyn is napping) about myself and I think it's normal for most young mothers to feel like they have lost a bit of themselves while caring for there children... I know I only have one at the moment and the other will be showing up this summer, but I just want to make sure I am the person I want to be. It's difficult to keep up on hobbies and things I loved before I started a family, but I think it's also important not to lose those things in order to develop talents and encourage my children to learn new things as well. I have a few things in mind to occupy myself during naps and no it's NOT scrapbooking (I gave that up a few years ago to convert to online books with NO mess and way less cost, not to mention time)!! Blake is getting me a sewing machine for my birthday and I plan to just try new things, along with the occasional mending of the clothes. I've gotten some fun fabric and ribbon to start my new hobby!! When I was younger I took sewing classes but I'm having a hard time remembering much these days besides the straight stitch... I could make a pillow case!! I always want to help with the humanitarian projects but didn't have a sewing machine to help with! I want to do better at journaling things that are important to me, but also new things Ashlyn learns and how she becomes her own little person... Just curious how any of you mom's keep a hold of who you are and things that you do when you have time to yourself??

Have fun with your new sewing machine! I still have the precious moments blanket you made Rylee when I was pregnant with her!

I think this is going to be a life-long challenge for us! That is partially why I'm taking on the new journey of changing careers, more time with Logan but still being able to have something for me (but that doesn't mean being gone 5 days/week)

Yeah..this is a hard thing! Not too long ago, one of Carl's friends asked him what my hobbies were, and he could only come up with things I enjoyed in high school and college. Not that I don't still engage in the hobbies, but I only do it out of necessity instead of enjoyment...ex. cooking and sewing. But, then I started getting together more with girls in the ward and doing group crafts like diaper bags and church quiet books. That helped. But, I think that the biggest thing is to take advantage of babysitters for more than just dates with the hubby. Enjoy a haircut..alone, etc.! My neighbor and I have started swapping a lot more, and that has given me more time to think of things other than Alyssa. But, in many ways, I find so much enjoyment right now in Alyssa's growth and accomplishments, that there isn't a compelling desire to do my own thing.

I'm with Amber. You should find a neighbor that is willing to trade babysitting with you so that you each can have a couple of hours to do what ever you want without the kids.

I always get a second wind after the kids go to bed even if I was having a hard time staying awake before. This is when I usually get the project done that I need to concentrate on, like sewing. Good luck on your search fo YOU!!

i like working on projects but have found that if i try to work on them while the kids are napping by the time i get everything out and get going they wake up! so i think its all about accepting this stage in life being all about the kids! i do take the kids to the library and pick out a book for myself and i love get togethers with friends! good luck!

I loved this post. I think about this same thing all the time. To be honest, the first year of Noelle's life was incredibly hard for me. But I have been trying hard to retain some part of myself. I'm so excited that you have a sewing machine...that is what I have been "trying" to do with some of my time. There are so many awesome projects out there and then you get to give stuff you make to Ashlyn...or Noelle. Just kidding. Besides sewing, I read a ton and when we finally get settled I am planning to do some volunteering. When you ask? Who knows. I can't wait to see what you whip up with that machine. Make sure to post everything.
